Guidance for writing to your MP

  • You can find your MP here, along with the email address to send correspondence.

  • You should address the letter to your MP, and primarily aim to persuade them to take action.

  • There are several causes for concern that you could write about. We would suggest the following: (Please see below, for an example of such correspondence.)

  1. You want the UK to uphold international law, show leadership in supporting the UN and the wider rules-based system, and the right to self-determination. This is a legal right of the Saharawi people, and as a permanent member of the UNSC, the UK has the opportunity to advocate for this during conflict resolution efforts.

  1. A report published by eight United Nations Special Rapporteurs in late May 2025 highlights a Moroccan campaign of repression, racial discrimination, and violence against Saharawi human rights defenders, and advocates for self-determination. This report is concerning, and suggests that the Saharawi people would be vulnerable to potential human rights abuses if the Moroccan Autonomy Plan were to be implemented. This resort suggests that a resolution of the conflict needs robust measures to protect human rights.

  1. Displaced Saharawis in refugee camps near Tindouf, Algeria, are facing climate change-driven vulnerabilities that impact livelihoods, food security, and human development. Young Saharawis are becoming increasingly disengaged because of a lack of opportunities. Without making progress towards a resolution that upholds their rights, the risk for further instability across the Maghreb, and opportunities for radicalisation, remain.

      Example letter:

Dear [name of MP],

As your constituent, I am asking you to represent my concerns about the developing situation in Western Sahara, and write on my behalf to Hamish Falconer MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office).

Taking note of the UK-Morocco Joint Communiqué, published on June 1st 2025, I have concerns that this shift towards support of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan risks damaging the UK’s image as a country that plays by the rules. More must be done to affirm the government’s commitment to the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination. As this is a legal right held by the Saharawi people, I urge the government to take action to promote the rule of law, justice and accountability on the world stage. Without explicit commitment to this, and recognition that Morocco does not hold sovereignty over Western Sahara, I have urgent concerns that this communiqué may damage Britain’s reputation, and the soft power it wields as an international actor.

In writing to you, I hope that you will share my belief that this international matter warrants action, and ministerial attention

I look forward to your response, and believe that in exercising my right as your constituent, you can help to convey my concern over recent developments to ensure that Britain maintains its reputation through appropriate handling of this matter.

Yours Sincerely,

[Constituent Name]
